Concept 1
Visual Links
The topic of the project Visual Links - dominants in the townscape - deals with the science of strolling. The two cities under investigation, Neustadt in Holstein and Stubbekøbing, are explored
explored through the sense of seeing. The central question for investigation is: Are the visual pathways also the pathways through the town? A further question is: How much does the gaze and the subconscious perception influence the direction of travel? These questions are further explored while considering possible barriers in the urban space. Attention is paid to whether walking along the visual axes is possible without any problems or whether structural or natural obstacles cross and obstruct the path. Attention is also paid to height differences in altitude, weather conditions and places of well-being along the routes.
The cities were explored on foot from the central square or the main place of arrival of local people, but explored by strangers. The routes are based on the four cardinal directions. During the stroll, only intuitive movements based on the surrounding spatial and architectural structures are followed. The route can be influenced by external factors. For the analysis, the thesis "Architectural dominants act as points of attraction and places that arouse interest, while spaces with a low quality of stay are passed through more quickly" was formulated.
Introduction and Development

The routes in Stubbekøbing start at the central bus stop at the northern harbor. This place also has a special meaning because many people travel by ferry. Due to the limitation of oceanfront in the north, there are only three routes. All lead through the historic center of the city, However, they end at different locations in the city. During the tour of the city there were special weather conditions due to cold and snow. Overall, the question of whether the visual pathways also represent the city's basic route connections can be answered with "yes". There are hardly any structural or natural barriers within the city center. Only park cars that make it difficult for pedestrians to cross the streets. In terms of urban planning, there are closed and historical buildings with divided spatial edges along the routes. However, to the west of the old silo at the harbor there are spatially unconfined areas where a negative perception prevails due to a poor sense of orientation. What is striking are the numerous rounded corners of buildings in the city, which create a calming effect. In many places there is a visual connection with the city church. This arouses great interest. However, whether it functions as a destination or just a short stay depends on the view you have of the town church and the adjacent square. The end points represent places from which no exciting elements appear in the field of vision and cause one to turn back.
The Route and Results
The routes in Neustadt start at Bahnhofsplatz to the west of the harbor. Due to the limitation of the water and inaccessible harbor areas in the south, there are also three main routes here. These lead to the industrial area in the west, the inland waterway in the north and the historic center in the east. It was slightly cloudy during the tour of the city. In comparison to Stubbekøbing, the answer to the question of whether the visual axes also represent the basic routes of the city is only partially answered. Structural barriers are perceived here primarily in the form of busy roads and construction sites.
In the city center, there are closed and historic buildings with structuring spatial edges, while in the remaining parts, undefined spaces with extensive streetscapes often determine the appearance. The route into the old town is most clearly influenced by architectural elements. The church and the town gate are buildings that arouse interest. On the other routes, there were less exciting elements. The end points here are only partly places from which no exciting elements appear in the field of vision and which encourage people to turn back. The destinations on the water and at the city gate invite you to linger with a beautiful view and areas with a high quality of stay.
The Route and Results
The towns of Neustadt in Holstein and Stubbekøbing have a similar urban structure in relation to the city center. Strolling through these areas of the city therefore has similar perceptions and elements that influence the routes. Overall, the perception of the urban spaces within the structured old towns with street alignments and orientation axes is the most positive. The low level of traffic congestion and large squares were also perceived positively. There is a striking difference when looking at the two maps. While in Neustadt all routes actually lead in the respective cardinal directions, in Stubbekobing they are centered around the city center. Overall,
tendencies of the direction of movement can be recognized by visual axes.
However, the influence of the weather should not be underestimated. Under similar conditions, the differences between the routes in the cities could be smaller. In addition, many other factors play a role that cannot be seen on the images or the routes and the routes play a role. It must be borne in mind that each route is set out with different intentions. Do you tend to visit beautiful places, do you want to walk as far as possible or do you have special preferences or goals, such as reaching the city center or having a particularly beautiful view of the water? These are subconscious aspects that influence the results. Although the comparison clearly shows that Neustadt is generally more diverse as a city, no final statement can be made about the two cities by applying this method.
